The guide verbally invites the blind person to engage, keeping conversation active until contact is made.
The blind person grasps the guide’s arm using a bottle grip: thumb opposed to the fingers, above the elbow, arm at 90°. The position must be comfortable.
Shoulders of guide and accompanied person should be parallel.
Variations include the hand on shoulder method.
The guide and accompanied person slightly overlap, occupying about the space of one and a half people.
