Optimising the Dance Environment

Creating a Safe and Accessible Space

  • Tactile or acoustic cues: floor markings, textured surfaces or subtle sound cues help participants orient themselves.
  • Minimal background noise: a quiet environment ensures music, verbal instructions and other auditory cues are easily perceived.
  • Supportive features: handrails or gripping points provide additional safety and confidence.
  • Clear and safe layout: remove obstacles, slippery surfaces or clutter to prevent accidents and allow free movement.
  • High contrast and appropriate lighting: for participants with residual vision, well-placed lighting and contrasting objects improve spatial awareness.

By thoughtfully designing the dance environment, instructors empower participants to explore movement confidently, focus on creativity and engage fully in the session while minimising the risk of accidents.
