Compensating for Vision Loss

Effective Methods to Support Visually Impaired Dancers

  • Passive movement: the instructor gently guides the participant’s body to help them feel and understand the movement.
  • Tactile learning: encourage participants to touch the instructor or themselves to grasp movement mechanics and spatial relationships.
  • Auditory aids: use instruments or sound cues — such as buzzers, tambourines or metronomes — to signal direction, rhythm or positioning.
  • Low vision support: use high-contrast markings, floor patterns or brightly coloured objects to enhance visibility and spatial orientation.
